How Orthodontic Treatment Works

Orthodontic appliances can be made of metal, ceramic, or plastic. They may be removable or they may be brackets that are bonded to the teeth. By placing a constant, gentle force in a carefully controlled direction, braces slowly move teeth to better positions. Fortunately, the time is right for braces now. Why? Materials used to move teeth are the result of years of research and refinement to develop methods to apply gentle continuous forces. The days of thick braces and thick wires with heavy pressure (sore teeth) are largely a thing of the past. You can choose brackets that are stainless steel or clear. At each appointment, you can also choose the colour of the ties that hold the wire in the brackets.

Duration of Treatment

Treatment time typically ranges from one to three years, depending on the growth of the particular individual's jaws and face, and the severity of the problem. Patients grow at different rates, and jaws are different shapes and sizes, so the time required to complete orthodontic treatment will vary from one person to the next. Diligent use of any prescribed headgear, appliances, or elastics are important factors in achieving the most efficient treatment and in being finished on schedule. Interceptive, or early treatment procedures, can take as little as 6 -12 months.
